ARCHIE HASTE

I am a product and furniture designer based in London, UK. My practice is grounded in utilitarian principles, prioritising functionality through simplicity. I adopt a hands-on approach to design, exploring material qualities and refining concepts through prototyping. I have developed strong practical skills in woodworking and metalworking, along with experience in CAD programs and 3D printing, I bring an iterative, maker-driven process to all of my work.

FOLD SHELVING SYSTEM

An investigation into the use of a mass manufacturing method, sheet metal folding, to bring form and function to a flat, sheet material. Developing a component part constructed from aluminium to produce a series of domestic storage solutions that are modular, and system based.

Due to this projects emphasis into exploring mass manufacturing methods for sheet aluminium I thought it was important to keep the shelving system clean, but also to be honest about its construction, presenting its holes, folds and joints. This produced details that provide an insight into its manufacture and construction, whilst also showcasing its ability to expand and grow as a set of modular shelving.

The system stems around the design of a pair of bracket components that can be stacked to produce a range of archetypal furniture, transforming into shelving, sideboards and bookcases in a range of sizes, and mounting possibilities.

PROTOTYPING FORM AND MANUFACTUING METHODS

An investigation into producing form from a flat sheet material, how different forms can produce different functions. Exploring different sheet metal manufacturing methods, brake press, bead roller, plasma cutter.
